During a Forefront Threat Management Gateway installation, I encountered an ADAM setup failure reported with error 0x80074e46. My original April 2012 post described the checks I explored around Active Directory connectivity, trust and network configuration.
Begin with the installer log
The original note pointed to the ISAADAM_INSTALL_* log family under the Windows temporary directory. Its exported path lost a separator; the intended form is:
%windir%\Temp\ISAADAM_INSTALL_*
Find the log for the failed installation attempt and inspect the surrounding entries. Record the time, server role, domain membership and network configuration so the error can be interpreted in its actual context.
Treat connectivity and trust as hypotheses
The original troubleshooting considered communication with Active Directory and the machine’s domain trust. That is a direction to investigate, not proof that this error code has one universal cause.
Review the evidence for domain-controller discovery, name resolution and connectivity from the server. The original mentioned nltest but did not preserve an exact command in the article text. Consult the utility help and choose the diagnostic that answers the specific question before running a repair operation.
Check the network configuration deliberately
The source post suggested checking connection bindings and the interface facing Active Directory. In a multi-interface legacy firewall, examine the intended network design and actual settings before changing interface order.
A change should address a documented discrepancy. Record the baseline and verify the result, rather than changing several network settings at once and losing the ability to identify what mattered.
Do not turn a historical workaround into the default fix
The original post suggested leaving the domain, installing TMG and rejoining when earlier checks did not resolve the issue. This revision retains that historical context but does not recommend domain removal as the routine next step.
Changing domain membership can affect policy, service dependencies and administration. Use an isolated reproduction and a documented recovery plan if that path must be investigated. A suspected policy restriction should first be tied to the actual policy and installer evidence.
Close the investigation with a reproducible explanation
Keep the relevant log excerpt, the hypothesis, the one change tested and the resulting behavior together. If the installation succeeds, verify the expected operating configuration rather than recording setup completion alone.
This article preserves a historical troubleshooting experience. It does not claim a newly reproduced TMG installation or a verified fix for every occurrence of the error.
